The Robinson R22 is a two-seat piston helicopter used for training and other light-helicopter operations. Its pilots, training and intended use are central to an insurance application.
But insuring an R22 isn’t as simple as its design. From pilot minimums to usage endorsements, choosing the right policy means partnering with a team that understands the details of rotorcraft coverage.
At BWI Aviation Insurance, we can help you explore R22 coverage for your aircraft and operation. Tell us about your flight experience, training and how the helicopter will be used.

Frequently Asked Questions – Robinson R22 Insurance
Q: Can I get insured as a student pilot in an R22? Student-pilot coverage depends on insurer approval, the training plan and the proposed operation. Ask BWI to review those details with you. FAA training and endorsement requirements apply separately.
Q: Do I need commercial or instructional endorsements? Tell BWI about any instruction, rental or flight-school use. The policy’s approved use, pilot provisions and any endorsements should fit the operation; an owner’s policy and a pilot’s non-owned coverage serve different purposes.
Q: Can I get an Open Pilot Warranty? An open pilot warranty, if offered, sets qualifications for pilots not specifically named on the policy. Its wording and the permitted use still matter; it does not necessarily insure the visiting pilot personally.
Q: Is there a discount for storing my aircraft in a hangar? Tell BWI where and how the helicopter is stored. Any premium credit depends on the insurer and the proposed policy.
Q: How long does the quoting process take? Timing depends on a complete application, the proposed operation and insurer review. BWI can explain the next steps after reviewing your submission.
