Avemco is the only direct-writing, aviation insurance company in the US. Avemco sets their insurance rates, has their own in-house underwriters and also provides knowledge and advice directly to their customers.
Avemco underwrites their rates directly and therefore can offer insurance for some unique situations, either under-qualified transition pilots, pilots with multiple claims or other unique insurance situations.
BWI is a family-owned insurance brokerage that specializes in Aviation Insurance and has done since 1977. BWI has appointments with all of the major aviation insurance (non-direct) companies in the US. BWI works with these insurance companies to shop and compare to find you the best coverage at the best rates.
By leveraging relationships with 12+ Aviation Insurance carriers, BWI has significantly more capacity and more options for most aviation insurance situations. More companies, and more competition, leads to lower rates and better coverages.
Both companies have options to insure your aircraft but that is where the similarity ends. Differences in price, coverages, service and claims handling are significantly different for both companies.
Price:
For most situations BWI and our insurance markets can offer aircraft insurance coverage for 30%-50% less than a similar Avemco Insurance Policy. BWI can offer multiple insurance quotes, from multi A+ rated aviation insurance companies, giving our customer more choice, lower prices and more insurance options. Avemco can only offer a single quote.
Coverage:
Aviation Insurance Policy specifics vary from company to company, but the single greatest difference between an Avemco Policy and a BWI brokered policy, is the liability sub-limit.
- Avemco has a per person sub-limit. Which could leave you with hundreds of thousands less in coverage, in the event of an accident. A per-person limit, limits the amount of liability coverage to each person and may not cover damage outside of the aircraft.
- BWI’s companies use a per-passenger, sub-limit. This means with a typical total liability coverage of $1,000,000 (per occurrence) and limited to $100,000 per passenger, if you had 3 passengers in the aircraft, you would have 3 x $100,000 in coverage available for the passengers and $700,000 in coverage available for damage outside of the aircraft and for legal defense.
Service:
At BWI, our office is open and staffed with friendly, knowledgeable agents, 12 hours a day ( 6 AM- 6 PM Pacific, Mon-Fri). We work directly for our customers in advising them and obtaining the best insurance coverages with our insurance company partners. We are able to to put our customers best interests first, even if that means moving them to another insurance company.
Avemco’s employees have an interest in looking out for Avemco as a company first and the customer second. This is the true advantage of having a middleman like BWI represent you. We put you and your aircraft insurance needs first and foremost.
