Whenever we source electric aircraft insurance for a new client, I’m often reminded as to how far flight has come in such a short period of time. Certainly, flight is so ubiquitous in modernity that it sort of feels like flight has always been with yes. Yet, the Wright Brothers first flight took place in 1903 and 100 years in the course of human history is merely a moment.
In that span of time, flight has evolved rapidly and even taken us to the moon and back. We now have drones and planes that can fly themselves and electric aircraft is now coming into its own. Electric aircraft insurance is not the most common coverage we source by far, but we are seeing it more often now that technology is advancing. So let’s talk about the future of electric flight.
Electric Flight is Breaking Records around the World
On August 30th, 2020, a Pipistrel Velis Electro took to the skies over Zurich and headed for the North Sea. This was a certified all-electric trainer aircraft and it flew the route across Germany while breaking 7 records in the process. Those records are as follows:
Lowest energy consumption (kWh/100km) over 700km
Highest average speed over 700 km (km/h)
Highest altitude ever reached by an electric aircraft (metre above main sea level)
Fastest climb performance from 0-1000m/1000-2000m/2000-3000 (m/s)
Fastest average speed over 100km (km/h)
Lowester number of intermediate stops on 700km distance (number of stops)
Longest electrically flown distance in 24/48/56 hours (km)
Now, I’m not sure if those records sound like much to you, but it’s light years from where we were 10 years and nowhere close to where we will be 10 years from now. You can’t fight progress and the future of electric aircraft is inevitable. I’m not saying that it is going to overtake fuel based aircraft anytime soon or ever. However, electric aircraft are going to take a large slice of the market as the technology advances.
Electric Aircraft Insurance is very similar to Aviation Insurance
As fascinating as the future of electric flight may be, when it comes to electric aircraft insurance policies it is business as usual. You’ll need the same liability and hull coverage that you would want with any aircraft and it’s really just a matter of the cost to repair or replace an electric aircraft that dictates the price. Moreover, if your electric aircraft is an experimental version, then you’ll have a unique and custom policy worked up to cover you.
At BWI, we believe in the Future Of Aviation Insurance and we specialize in electric aircraft insurance both for personal private and charter use and also in insuring electric aircraft startup companies.
