Overview
What can one say about the North American P-51 Mustang that history has not already said. This aircraft was an American long-range, single -seat fighter-bomber used by the Americans and the Royal Air Force during World War 2. Loved by historians and aircraft aficionado’s alike, this aircraft is a highly sought after prize possession in the 21st century civilian aviation market.
After the war, P-51s were sold as surplus for as little as $1,500. As of 2011, there were 205 privately owned P-51s in the U.S. according to the FAA registry, most of which are still flying. Such an aircraft can now easily command more than $1 million, even if that is just for a partially restored aircraft.
There have been several civilian P-51 Mustang crashes since it entered private aviation. Among those incidents, the following are included:
- June 9, 1973 – A certified pilot and his passenger were both killed when a privately owned P-51 Mustang crashed near Lakeport, California.
- July 1, 1990 – A pilot was killed while flying his P-51 while flying in a national air show in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
- September 16, 2011 – A modified P-51 flying during an air race in Reno, Nevada, crashed into a crowd of people below. Nine people on the ground were killed in addition to the pilot.

As of February, 2021, there are 7 carriers quoting P51 Mustang insurance in the U.S. We consider qualified pilots to have at least a private license, with 500 total hours, 100 tailwheel hours and at least 10 hours in the make/model.
For an annual policy with $1,000,000 in liability only coverage.
Premium range for qualified pilots: $700-$850 per year.
Premium range for less than qualified pilots (less than 10 make/model): $835-$940 per year.
For an annual policy with $1,000,000 in liability coverage and $175,000 in hull coverage
Premium range for qualified pilots: $5,800-$7,600 per year
Premium range for less than qualified pilots (non-IFR and less than 25 make/model) $8,500-$13,580 per year.
