The Cirrus SR20 is a pilot favorite, and for good reason.
It’s sleek, modern, safe, and built with avionics that make learning (and progressing) efficient and enjoyable.
But when it comes to insurance, a lot of new pilots don’t realize how many small mistakes can cost them time, money, or coverage.
At BWI, we’ve helped thousands of pilots insure their SR20s, from student pilots to experienced CFIs. And we’ve seen it all.
Here are the 5 most common SR20 insurance mistakes new pilots make, and how to avoid them.
Mistake 1: Submitting a Quote Without Your Training Plan
If you’re a student or transition pilot, underwriters want to know:
- Where you’re training
- What your syllabus looks like
- Who your CFI is
- How you plan to build Cirrus time
Without this info, some underwriters will pass, or quote you like a brand-new pilot.
Fix: Submit a short written plan and instructor contact info with your quote request.
Mistake 2: Forgetting to Count SR22 or Sim Time
If you trained in an SR22, or logged hours in a Cirrus-approved simulator, that time matters.
A lot of brokers just submit the number in the “SR20 hours” box and call it a day. But underwriters will often credit relevant SR-series time or sim training if it’s presented clearly.
Fix: Tell your broker about any SR22, TAA, or sim experience, and attach screenshots or logs.
Mistake 3: Working With a Broker Who Doesn’t Know Cirrus
The SR20 is a Cirrus. It’s not a Skyhawk. And your policy should reflect that.
We’ve seen brokers:
- Submit generic quote forms
- Miss training credits
- Forget to ask for open pilot warranties
- Only quote 1 or 2 underwriters (when we quote 6+)
Fix: Work with a Cirrus-focused broker, someone who knows what the underwriters want to see.
Mistake 4: Ignoring Liability Structure
Not all liability limits are created equal. A lot of entry-level policies cap coverage at $100,000 per passenger, even if your total policy limit is $1,000,000.
Fix: Ask your broker to walk you through per-seat vs. smooth liability, and what makes sense for how you fly.
Mistake 5: Submitting Too Late
Cirrus policies don’t take weeks to quote, but if you wait until the day before delivery, you might rush into the wrong policy or miss better coverage options.
Fix: Start your quote process 7–10 days before closing or delivery. That gives you time to compare and choose with confidence.
