If you’re flying a Cirrus Vision Jet, or preparing to, there’s a good chance you’ve heard the term “smooth liability.”
It sounds better. It feels safer. But it also costs a bit more.
So here’s the big question:
Is smooth liability worth it for Vision Jet owners?
After quoting dozens of SF50 policies over the past few years, here’s our honest take, based on real pilot profiles, real claims experience, and real underwriting standards.
What Is Smooth Liability?
In most aviation insurance policies, liability coverage is split into:
• Total liability limit – often $1,000,000
• Per-passenger sublimit – usually $100,000 or $250,000
That means if an accident occurs, your coverage might cap payouts to individual passengers at $100K–$250K, regardless of the actual injury or damage.
Now imagine a Vision Jet with 4–5 people on board.
If two are seriously injured, you could easily exceed that sublimit—and the rest comes out of your pocket.
Smooth liability solves that.
It offers one unified limit, typically $1M available across all claims, regardless of who was injured.
Why It Matters in the Vision Jet
Most Vision Jet owners:
• Fly with family or business associates
• Travel across multiple states or internationally
• Carry significant personal or professional liability
• Want peace of mind at 30,000 feet
In those situations, smooth liability gives you flexibility in a worst-case scenario.
It lets your legal defense team allocate the full $1M limit where it’s needed most, without arbitrary seat-based caps.
Who Qualifies for Smooth Coverage?
Here’s what most underwriters look for:
• 1,500+ total time
• 100+ hours in turbine aircraft (or Cirrus + type rating)
• Factory-endorsed Vision Jet training
• A clean claims history
• A clear, stable flight profile (Part 91 personal/business use)
If you’re early in your turbine journey, you may not qualify—yet.
But we’ve helped many pilots structure a plan that gets them there.
What Can Go Wrong (Even If You Qualify)
We’ve seen brokers forget to request smooth liability, or assume the pilot didn’t qualify, and bind a per-seat policy by default.
We’ve also seen underwriters decline smooth coverage simply because the broker didn’t include enough training data or explain the pilot’s story well.
At BWI, we don’t take chances.
We ask. We advocate. We know what underwriters want, and how to present your risk profile correctly.
Is It Worth It?
Let’s be honest, smooth liability typically costs a few hundred dollars more per year.
But in a world where medical bills, lawsuits, and settlements can stretch well into seven figures, that extra $300–$600 could be the best value in your entire policy.
If you fly with passengers regularly…
If you use your aircraft for business…
If you care about flexible protection…
Yes. Smooth liability is absolutely worth it.
