Even before Alaska became a state, it relied on aviation to unite its expansive terrain, starting with a Fourth-of-July demo flight that took off from a Fairbanks ball field and continuing into the 1920s with airmail, regional passenger flights, and cargo delivery. Air transport and its necessary infrastructure grew in the 1930s with the founding of such companies as Alaska Airlines and the creation of Merrill Field in Anchorage. During World War II, Alaska’s strategic location led to the construction of military airbases.
Challenges of Flying in Alaska
Today, only 18 percent of Alaska’s communities are accessible by road, which makes flying the primary means of getting around for many communities and has led to the state having the highest number of certified pilots per capita than any other state. Bush pilots still take passengers and cargo to areas where conventional aircraft cannot land because the rugged terrain is beset by strong winds, frequent fog, heavy snowfall, fickle weather patterns, and the occasional natural disaster like a tsunami or an earthquake.
BWI Aviation Insurance understands how important flying is to the people and businesses of Alaska and stands ready to support this industry by becoming the best aviation insurance industry on planet Earth. Through our core values of integrity, exceptionalism, adaptability, and synergy, we want to become an essential part of making your flight operations more self-sufficient.
BWI Insurances Solutions for Alaska
At BWI, we offer many kinds of insurance policies to meet the varying needs of the Alaskan aviation industry8, including all the businesses and people involved in flight. Our insurance solutions have the following advantages.
Customized Products
Because we partner with multiple A+ rated aviation insurance companies, we can customize insurance products using competitive rates and lower insurance prices, backed by knowledgeable service. Our private and commercial coverage includes aircraft renters insurance, hangar coverage, hull insurance, mechanic insurance, professional liability, flight school insurance, aviation workers’ compensation, and flying club coverage.
Among the aircraft makes we take care of are Aeronca, Aviat Husky’s, Beavers, Beechcraft, Bellanca, Cessna, Champion, Cirrus, CubCrafters, Grumman, Lancairs, Maules, Piper, Robinsons, Stearmans, Taylorcrafts, and more. We also provide solutions for such private jets as Bombardier, Cirrus Vision, Citation, Embraer, Falcon, Gulfstream, King Air, Learjet, Pilatus, and Socata TBM.
Policies for Bush Pilots
Bush pilots fly to the state’s most remote regions, where they can face greater risks while acting as school buses, delivery vans, ambulances, trucks, and taxis for rural communities. Our specialized policy guards these intrepid fliers in areas with minimal infrastructure, more challenging terrain, and harsher weather. This includes coverage for seaplanes and off-airport landings, both of which are more common in the state.
Drone Insurance
Drones, also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), are often used in Alaska for surveying, inspecting infrastructures, law enforcement, search and rescue, and monitoring wildlife because they can fly to areas that are too expensive or dangerous for manned aircraft to reach. We protect operators, training facilities, and businesses against liability for damage to the drone, third-party property damage, and bodily injury.
Emergency Services and Support
The vast wilderness and isolated locales of Alaska mean that life-saving assistance may not arrive immediately during an accident or other emergency. BWI aviation policies can allow for emergency services, such as search and rescue, which may be the only option in remote areas. Pilots and passengers can fly more confidently, knowing they are covered for help when needed.
Expertise in High-Risk Environments
We at BWI have developed our deep and practical understanding of the often unpredictable Alaskan aviation environment by working closely with the pilots who deal with it every day. We continually assess their needs and offer ways to manage risk by creating coverage that is affordable and all-encompassing.
Our Alaska Commitment
Our commitment to our Alaskan aviation customers has prompted us to create a state-local office at 4451 Aircraft Drive, Suite 220, in Anchorage, which you can also phone at (907) 202-5559. You can visit us for face-to-face consultations or tailored quotes. For your convenience, we are staffed year-round and are open 5 days a week and 12 hours a day.
