Reviewed October 26, 2026. Before buying a Cessna 182, request insurance terms for the actual aircraft, pilots and intended operation. The purchase process should leave time to resolve approval, training, coverage and effective-date questions before the intended flight.
Identify the aircraft you intend to buy
Provide the exact model designation, year, registration, configuration and equipment from the aircraft records. Identify fixed or retractable landing gear and the engine configuration accurately. Review the proposed insured hull value with BWI and provide supporting information requested for the aircraft.
A proposal for one Skylane should not be assumed to apply to a different aircraft or variant. Tell the broker if your purchase candidate changes.
Prepare current pilot and use information
Supply the experience, ratings, recent activity, training and loss information requested for each proposed pilot. Describe the use, base, storage and operating areas. Explain instruction, rental, commercial work or other activities instead of assuming they fit personal-use wording.
If you are transitioning into the aircraft, describe the proposed training. Ask which pilots can be approved and what conditions must be met before flying. A certificate, rating or course completion does not automatically establish insurance approval.
Decide what coverage to request
Discuss physical-damage coverage, the proposed hull value, liability limits and passenger sublimits with BWI. Check deductibles in motion and not in motion, relevant exclusions, territorial limits and endorsements. Explain any lender, lease or contractual insurance requirements that need review.
Do not assume a quote includes every phase of operation or every intended activity. Review the actual policy terms when coverage is arranged.
Use cost data within its stated scope
The reviewed Cessna 182 cost guide states the quote dates, hull-value band, coverage terms, offer count and calculation method. Its pooled pilot profiles do not establish a personalized rate or separate prices for every retractable or turbocharged variant.
The supplied records do not substantiate the earlier renewal-volume or market-improvement claims in this buyer’s guide. We do not promise a fixed training discount, a universal flight-hour qualification or a standard model surcharge.
Compare proposals before choosing
Compare the same requested coverage where available, while keeping each aircraft’s actual value visible. Review annual premiums separately from installment payments, fees and financing charges. A lower premium with changed limits, deductibles or pilot conditions is not an identical coverage purchase.
For configuration questions, see the fixed-versus-retractable Skylane comparison. For application preparation, use the 182 submission checklist.
Confirm timing before the first flight
Ask what remains outstanding, who is approved to fly and when coverage will become effective. Buying the aircraft, submitting an application or receiving a quote does not by itself bind insurance. Obtain written confirmation rather than assuming coverage begins at closing.
Talk with BWI
Request an aircraft insurance review, call 800-666-4359 or email [email protected]. Requesting a quote does not bind coverage; coverage is not effective until confirmed in writing.
